The town was established in 1881 by a local rancher named Mathew Henry Cochrane. At this time, Cochrane was simply referred to as Cochrane Ranche, and did not become a village until 1903. It had its first volunteer fire department and newspaper by 1909, and became incorporated as a town in 1971.
Cochrane is known for its small-town sensibility; the prevailing cohesive sense of community; its authentic and compelling character of a town centre; its numerous urban amenities; its quick drive to Banff, Calgary, and Kananaskis; and its proximity (1 hour drive) to the magnificent Rocky Mountains that so prominently feature in its landscape.
